TRENDS FOR INNOVATING IN THE CLASSROOM

"They obviously need to focus on the education of the student, but it's necessary to develop, evaluate and certify other fronts and capacities". ANNA PENIDO

Conceived in the 19th century with the objective of training an industrial workforce, the current educational model was devised for education of the masses. With technological advances and behavioural changes in society, new education practices are fundamental to meet contemporary demands. 21st-century students seek to combine personal fulfilment with work. As we know, personal fulfilment is something subjective and private, and is connected to the skills, likes, interests and limitations of each individual.

With the objective of rethinking pedagogical practices and the instruments used in educational processes, Geekie – accredited personalised education platform from MEC – hosted the 1st Innovation Culture Gathering.

The conventional curriculum is no longer sufficient. “They obviously need to focus on the education of the student, but it’s necessary to develop, evaluate and certify other fronts and capacities”. ANNA PENIDO

Anna Penido, director of the Inspirare Insitute and mediator of the meeting, details the main ideas that are being debated:

Personalisation of the teaching: “We have to get away from this sterile model in which the teacher gives the same class to all students, irrespective of each one’s profile. People are different so we therefore have to begin to consider this diversity in the pedagogical process. The main tendency is the creation of strategies that, even within the same classroom, enable teachers to perceive who is really learning and therefore provider the necessary stimuli”.

Experimentation: “For today’s society simply showing content is not enough. The students must be allowed to experience situations and learn in another manner – whether by formulating hypotheses, doing experiments or developing other capacities like creativity, for example. This is increasingly important in the modern world”.

Focus on comprehensive development: “The conventional curriculum is no longer sufficient. “They obviously need to focus on the education of the student, but it’s necessary to develop, evaluate and certify other fronts and capacities”.
